decentralized video art on the Bitcoin blockchain

Overview

webglo, or WebGL Ordinals, is a pioneering video art project that embeds high-fidelity, browser-rendered graphics onto the Bitcoin blockchain using the Ordinals protocol. Leveraging WebGL—a web-based evolution of OpenGL—and native Javascript/HTML5, this project transforms the blockchain into a canvas for dynamic, GPU-driven art. It’s a bold step forward in decentralized creativity, merging the permanence of the Bitcoin network with the limitless potential of real-time graphics. The project with the focus of hosting video art on the Bitcoin using the Ordinals protocol. Each Ordinal is an individual file that contains HTML, Javascript and a GLSL fragment shader that renders a generative graphic. These graphics render directly from the blockchain and are viewable inside a web browser.

Inspiration

I traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, twice in 2023. While walking through the city at night, I came across an illuminated sign for Bar Locál Sofia, and for some reason, it pulled me in. Once I stepped inside, it felt as though I had been there many times before. It quickly became a place I looked forward to returning to whenever I was back in Sofia.

While I was there, I would draw in my lexemes style as a way to process the ongoing life turmoil I was experiencing at the time. The owner and staff were deeply welcoming, and I felt that this bridge between worlds was something necessary to experience. That feeling inspired me to create webglo: art that is universally accessible, able to move across borders without requiring any technological setup beyond a Chrome web browser and an internet connection. It is a representation of the interpersonal and spiritual connections I felt with the people in that space, and of the evolving nature of life that can be tapped into when you are willing to communicate.

Details

Bitcoin Ordinals let people attach special information, like images or messages, to the smallest units of Bitcoin, called satoshis. This turns those satoshis into unique, collectible items while still being part of the Bitcoin system. It’s possible thanks to an update to Bitcoin that allows secure and permanent storage of this extra data.
